I live in Baton Rouge and am newish to the area. I really want to see a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. Are there any parades you can suggest that aren't insanely crowded and crazy? I'm looking for something family friendly but fun. Also where the heck do people park? On a normal day it's hard to find parking so any tips would be appreciated!

The big parades Uptown are Sunday and Monday night before Mardi Gras. All of the other ones will have less crowd. Take a look at the schedule, and pick a night you want to go.

I would suggest Friday night leading into the big weekend. It's the best night imo. There is still some room on the neutral ground (especially at intersections) and the ground isn't completely saturated with various runoff yet.

Did you know that Baton Rouge has parades as well? If you're new, it may be a gentle introduction to Mardi Gras and it's a lot closer.

Know one thing....Mardi Gras is crowded, but, it's not a crowd that is annoying. It's a good crowd. I have many friends that have been worried about crowds and were pleasantly surprised how much they "enjoyed" the crowds. It's only really annoying when you stand in an area that has a barricade in the front...it's get tough there. Stand on St. Charles Uptown for any parade, get your little spot, meet those around you, and no matter how crowded you'll enjoy yourself.

Seriously, do talk to the people around you - that's part of what makes New Orleans so amazing - they'll give you all sorts of info and maybe give you some of their loot in sympathy if you're like me and hopeless at getting the good stuff.
