I understand the closeness to the CBD and the access to transit, and I guess that's why the price is high. But I drive regardless. Also, when I look at the housing in mid-city, it still seems to be priced high for what you get. And you still have the outrageous insurance and tax issue that you don't get outside the city. Since we are looking for a compromise between CBD and BR, maybe we should look to River Ridge or LaPlace.
Then just move to the suburbs. If Uptown is the only nieghborhood(s) that you think is worth the cost of the extra expenses of living in the city but you still can't afford the houses there, then the suburbs seem to be your only viable option.

But if you really look I bet you could find a good house in Uptown or Mid City. You could also give up on the idea of good walkability and try the other city neighborhoods mentioned.

Yes, you definitely sound like candidates for the 'burbs. Slidell comes to mind, though I am sure its not a commute you would be interested in. You seem to want suburban style living in the city with some walkability, but don't want to pay for it. As someone said, keep looking, be willing to compromise on neighborhood or a "fixer upper" or get out to the suburbs where you can get what you really seem to want.

Sorry for that, Hunter...operating on little sleep. I think you would be surprised by how nice (and walkable) much of Mid-City is.

I guess I should have been more clear in my original post. The suburbs are exactly where we should be. What I am trying to find is the best suburb for a household with one person commuting to new orleans, and the other commuting to BR. For that situation, what would the best suburb be, if we want to remain closer to New Orleans? If Kenner, where in Kennere (Chateau?). If Luling or Metairie, where should I look? What about River Ridge?

There are some new subdivisions off Loyola Ave in Kenner that look to be really nice. They could fit in your price range. Also look at Destrehan and La Place for a more equal commute. Even the North Shore could be an option.

Mandeville or Covington could work if you don't mind the Causeway. Wife can zip down 12 to BR. It's very a conservative territory and not for everyone, but a decent geographic compromise with reasonable prices.
