I guess you could call this a mini-rant.

I have been watching the parades today on the Fat Harry's live cam, which has been streaming very well this year.

But does anyone on here know WHY the street police has to stand right in the middle of a marching band as they pass by???? This just looks so rude to me.

Spectators (usually drunk) run into the parades and attack the marchers at times. Sometimes they try to grab an instrument and play it. Sometimes its easier to intervene when your already inside of the zone instead of running in from the sidelines. Trust me, the marchers don't miss a beat. They appreciate the protection, and are use to it.

This happened a couple weeks ago in Slidell. Teenagers were drunk and arrested.

That's probably the best vantage point for them. They're in a great position to respond if they see sonething go down.

Well, I was told by an ex-band member (not from there) that a person standing in the middle of a passing parade like that can cause an injury to someone playing an instrument if they happen to thump the person (damage to the mouth). And it's probably happened there.

But, then, bands that parade often, as they do there, are likely used to it.

Thanks for all your input.

When you think about the huge amount of drunk people and all of the crazy stuff that goes on during Mardi Gras, you have to respect the NOPD. I don't think another city could do what they do.

norb123 I agree so much. It must be a task. They are not a typical police department for sure. Things are nuts here all year long.

Its more like a police officer getting hurt by a band member. They are like military marchers. They go straight line. They will run you over. They even march over the horse poop if its in there way. The police are aware of this. They don't want to get hit. This event has been going on since the 1700s. Its a symbiotic relationship. Everyone does there job.
