I almost never went to the Quarter living in New Orleans...and when I did it was when friends and/or family were in town. The French Quarter is awesome, but for locals its more of a hassle than its worth when you can venture to more mellow, less touristy parts of the city (ie. Magazine Street, St. Charles, or the Lakefront)

It's nice to go to the Quarter every once in a while. Typically just to go on a nice stroll around, eat somewhere, Jackson Square, Moonwalk, etc. A night out will occasionally be in the Quarter, mostly random bars and then onto the Marigny, never ever anywhere close to Bourbon Street. But otherwise, I stick to Mid-City or venture out to somewhere Uptown or in the Bywater/Marigny. The Quarter can be a hassle, plus all the tourists and things just seem more expensive, but as a local it is worth going to the Quarter a few times a year, if not for anything other than people watching and seeing the architecture/history. I actually need to make it out there.

Normally when friends are in town but yes locals do go to the Quarter. We just stay away from Bourbon.

When we lived there ewe went to church and ate lunch on Sunday in the Quarter. Otherwise, we avoided it, unless it was work related.

Going to the quarter for some day drinking in the Spring or Fall is a lot of fun, but I only go a couple of times a year, and it's usually because someone else wants to. Personally, I don't care for the FQ and the type of people it attracts: i.e. tourists, drunks, criminals
