So I have been reading online a few forums on this subject and would like to share my experience. I have currently been in a Bronx shelter with my 4 y/o son since Thanksgiving 2019. I applied for nycha as well as other affordable housing /subsidies in nyc (only because I don’t own a car) in February 2020 once I was fully stable with securing my employment. My experience has been different than others I’ve read on here... let me start off with first; I’m at a actual DHS facility so everything is monitored and case workers seem to operate differently. I can say my case manager probably was helpful in the beginning but since covid -19 it’s insane.. for one with the current job I have I annually make roughly 30k after taxes so my choices in housing affordability is pretty slim. I applied for nycha with no expectations, due to the long myth of “ you’ll be waiting forever” . That was not my case.. here is my process timeline ... February (mid month) I applied April (end of month) had interview May (early month) certified. May (end of month) selected for apt, waiting for cleaning/restoration of unit then provide documents and move in.. my expectation I assume would be that end of summer I could move in.. if earlier I’d update this post.. I vented and expressed this to people who are in situations such as mine no support, on your own, never lived on your own and ended up in the DHS system , DO NOT GIVE UP! If you’re on a shelter , abide by rules and stay employed , I’ve seen many women with families complain about kit being called for nycha and they been in the shelter system 2+ years , however they have not maintained employment , although welfare is Also income , you cannot rely on that to fully be sustained unless is the last resort. I know, I know been there and been down that road once in my life. Stay on top of the housing specialist, if you apply for Sota and. Have trouble getting a landlord to accept the program have the specialist call them and talk thorough the process “manipulation of course “ but that’s there job to do.

My move in interview is November 16th so I roughly been waiting for a few months , but that’s because I had to stay on top of it and I had 3 case workers since July , the shelter I’m in had a high turn over in car workers, I didn’t have the same case worker since I bene here. and nobody was following up . I viewed the apartment last week and they are finished they just have to change the locks and install fridge . So I’ll be moving in after my interview where I sign the lease and get my keys. Are u going through the same process?

well yeah, your process was speedy because you're a woman in a shelter with children

for those who are not in a shelter, the process is long and drawn out
