I won my affordable housing apartment last year (just prior to the pandemic) and in the meantime my bf moved in with me (he lost his job). I'd like to now formally add him to the lease... has anyone done this before? Will he have to go through all the paperwork that I initially did (taxes, paychecks, etc?). I have to sign a new lease at the end of the month so figured I would add him now.
With some income restricted lotteries you do. Just call the office and verify. You’ll have to let them know in any case.
I just sent an email to my management's office. Was wondering if anyone has gone through it but judging from my google searches, there's no "one size fits all" answer.
i've always wondered about this, too. like, can i add my partner and would that effect the rent? i don't think there's a simple answer. i think it varies by building/program. i checked my lease and there is no clear cut answer.
If there is nothing in your lease about a roommate, just go ahead and have him move in. You are legally entitled under rent stabilization to have a roommate. If you have read your lease carefully, and this topic isn’t addressed at all, you can always say you didn’t see anything.
In my friend’s lottery lease, it says she has to notify the landlord within one month of another person moving in.
Now, if there is a reason you want this person to be on the lease, that’s another story. Would you be able to add him as an occupant?
It shouldn't affect rent, but there's always some building built in 2003 under some weird special program that has idiosyncratic rules. In general, your rent should stay the same (barring approved increases) regardless of changes in household composition or income.
