Does anyone have any experience about winning lotteries as an individual/1 member household. I’ve been reading a lot of the threads and it seems like everyone who wins has a partner, children or both. I’ve been applying for years on my own and have yet to be contacted to submit documents. Keep in mind, I have ME preference. Any advice or personal experience would help, thanks!

I did win a housing lottery six months ago as an individual/one member household. I applied in October 2020, got contacted to submit the initial documents in May 2021, got approved by HPD & signed my lease in June 2021, moved into my lottery unit in July 2021. I didn't have any preferences, I'm in between 120% & 165% AMIs but I was lucky to win the 120% AMI price unit.

Thanks for the info! I’m not in that AMI bracket so it seems like I need another person or child or make more money

I don't think it makes any difference. As long as your income & household correspond to what the lottery asked when you applied with (or without) additional luck in preferences you may have, you shouldn't worry about not getting contacted when your log is reached. Also, as long as you can provide all documents that are required to proof that you qualify, there is no reason you get rejected just because you live by yourself &/or fall under lower AMI provided they still have units available. Keep on applying & don't give up!

Don't add another person! That may be worse if the two of you aren't considered a "household." Making more money is okay! LOL

You need luck more than another person.
ME preference is good. Community Board preference is typical many more units in a building, and comes ahead of ME preference. If your see a lottery where you have CB preference, understand you have an advantage there.

I won a lottery as an individual a few years ago. There is no preference for couples/multi-person households (within the household composition rules, e.g., you won't ever qualify for a 2-bed as a single-person household).

I won a re-rental as an individual - so it was originally a lottery and then they needed to refill their waitlist so I applied. I'm in the 40% AMI bracket. I applied in August, was contacted in September, and approved in December (I had been applying to other projects for about 5 years). Keep going!!
