Hi everyone. Does anyone know how it works/have experience with moving units or buildings after you've been accepted to a housing lottery? I live in a small lottery studio in one of the LIC buildings. Since I first got it, my income has changed to where I would be eligible for and can afford one bedroom units in this or other buildings. I remember my leasing specialist mentioning that it's easier to switch units once you're already in the lottery system. Does anyone know if that's true? Or would I need to be accepted in a new lottery again through the regular application process?

Any info much appreciated!

If I were you, I would ask the management office in the building you're currently living in if you can switch. Can you also get in touch with the leasing specialist who told you that?

If there is a way to switch apartments, many folks here would be interested in learning about it.

The same thing happened to me. I had asked about moving to a one bedroom and the office told me that I had to reapply and go through the entire process again with the new income.

Like macnyc said, you gotta get in touch with the person who made the claim that you could switch apartments. My agent from Breaking Ground told me the same thing and the building's management company confirmed that this was being told to the lottery winners so they honored it and put me on a waiting list for a larger apartment.

In my current building, you can only request to move into a different unit if your household size changes - so if someone gets added to or removed from the lease.

I agree with macynyc2003. Situations and circumstances will be different from building to building. For example, there might be a long list of people waiting for one bedroom in your category.

Some policies might be that same across some lotteries, others could be local to a building. But, speaking to that specialist you mentioned is an excellent first step. If you can’t locate them contact building management and ask them.
