From what I've gathered about the housing lottery is that while your log number plays a role, the AMI you fall into plays an even bigger one. So with that in mind, would applying to a building and inputting your income to be one of the higher AMI levels increase your chance of being called back? Then when they verify your income and see you're actually of lower AMI, would they just put you in one of those units if it's available? Yes I know it's technically cheating but I wonder how effective it might be.

I don't think that would work. As far as I can tell, they are meant to make sure things still go in log number order - I would expect they add you back into the waiting list for your own AMI apartments which will also get offered in log number order (for gen pop at least.) I am sure someone has been in the situation you describe before, for whatever reason (maybe their earnings decreased) so I am sure someone will be able to chime in and confirm this for you.
