You do what you have to do. I lived in a studio apartment with my husband and a 60 lb dog for almost ten years. That's all we could afford.

Sometimes, needs must.

Affordable housing on Housing Connect is not NYCHA.
You get what size you qualify for based on income and number of people that will live there.

Correct! Right now I’m living in a hell hole, I live in a small room and have 2 other roommates I have to share the kitchen, living room & bathroom room. It’s hell but I do what I have to do to survive in expensive nyc. I’m currently in process to getting into a 1br apartment with HC and even if they give me a studio I’ll gladly take it because at least I’ll have my own space! Life in nyc is hard so I try to be grateful for what I have and any opportunities that come my way.

This is a kid in his 20’s living with his 60 yr old mom and it’s probably going to be years until he can move out on his own. He’s going to be uncomfortable.

If this is a Housing Connect lottery then the reason(s) why they got offered a studio instead of 1BR or 2BR are either or both of the following:

1. They are eligible for either studio, 1BR, or 2BR but unfortunately 1BR & 2BR are all taken by lower log applicants so only studio unit left for them.
2. They are only eligible to get a studio unit due to income/voucher etc (most likely) so unfortunately that's all they can get.

Now, whether or not the OP has to accept the offer, my two cents will be... It depends on the OP current living situation with his mother. If they currently live in a better or decent condition & can wait for other opportunity that arises in the future to get 1BR/2BR apartment then he may want to turn down the offer & tell the marketing agent to put him & his mom into waitlist just in case 1BR/2BR becomes available.

In the other hand, if the OP & his mom would get a better & independent living situation by accepting this offer i.e. they currently live in a shelter or with multiple roommates in a poor living situation then the OP may want to accept though it's a studio because while a studio is not an ideal for two people living together but it will give them a better living situation & they can use this as a stepping stone for other housing opportunity that may arises in the future.

But again, this is just my two cents, everyone is different & the final decision should be in OP's hand. I wish you & your mom all the best!
