Skinny jeans are another example of a trend that was started in part by hipsters.

In regards to music, I couldn't disagree more. The best bands today are the smaller independent groups, and hipsters tend to be fans of these acts. If you're a top 40 type, then of course you will think hipsters have terrible taste in music.
I gave the hipsters credit for creating trends. See above. And I have never been a Top 40 listener. I simply like to enjoy my music based upon the actual music not on how obscure or ironic it is. And I certainly don't turn my back on a band once they become popular, like so many hipsters do. (Although, that is a general trend of most youth subculture.)

I find them somewhat harder to describe than recognize. They have a distinctly slummish and rough-around-the-edges style, along with some signature fashion pieces such as cutoff shorts, flannel shirts, scruffy faces, low-top Keds or Chucks with no socks, and those cheesy Ray-Ban Wayfarer style sunglasses (ie; Tom Cruise in "Risky Business"). At least one easily visible tattoo is almost ubiquitous with these types.

They tend to love engaging in overly serious conversations about politics or literature or art over cans of PBR or similarly cheap swill in dive-bars in Williamsburg, Bushwick, or East Village. The divier the better (see: Goodbye Blue Monday in Bushwick.) The obnoxiously intellectual slants they like to go off on often give away the fact the mommie and daddie paid for their overpriced educations and that their brains are filled with overly-nebulous crap because they were never bothered to take classes that taught practical skills for careers in the real world.

^Pretty much nailed it. I was kind of in that scene for a while but mostly got out because I looked around, realized "these girls are not even that hot" and I wanted to have non-ironic fun. Hipsters don't like to do things that normal people like. Me, I think the lights of Times Square are awe-inspiring (for a while), I can enjoy myself in Vegas. I can drink a Corona w/lime on a sandy beach and LIKE it. Hipsters would scoff. Too much sun and macro brewed beer! Well, eff em then. Let em cry over their vinyl records they'll hate in four months.

Never mind, it's a pretty obscure number and you probably wouldn't know it anyway.
HAHAHA! I love this! Copied and pasted to my bf while he's at work and he laughed and told his coworkers!

Good joke man!

So I and my kid (just graduated HS) and my wife were staying in Williamsburg last week, with our frummie (haredi, ultraorthodox, etc) relations. Shabbat afternoon I ask my kid if she'd like to go for a shpatzir (a stroll, walk). She says yes, and wants to go see hipster land. So we walk up Bedford past the cultural frontier, all the way to Greenpoint. We found it eye opening and quite interesting. We had discussions of architecture, and of the subtle differences between hipsters and yuppies, with refererences to what little I knew about the settlement of SoHo by artists back in the dark ages.

Daughter asks me "but where do hipsters come from?"

My response: When a daddy hipster really loves a mommy hipster...

"Too much sun and macro brewed beer!"

I proudly used to be a yuppie, graduated college in 1981, spent the late 80s in Bolton Hill Baltimore and then in a loft in Canton, Baltimore. (I would be a yuppie still, but I am no longer young, and the workings of real estate and schools have placed me in the suburbs (of DC), though we still have empty nester urban dreams)

In my recollection, micro brews were originally a Yuppie thing, going back to Sam Adams (the beer, not the patriot).

BTW I also remember when the mexican beer with a slice of lime fad first came in, which IIRC was just before Sam Adams, and was equally yuppie.

Sorry, brooklynborndad, I think it's more like:

"When a daddy hipster sort of wants to hang with an actual female for a change and they read the same Kafka and the day-star gets too strong, they go back to her place and despite (or because of) the lack of any recognizable furniture..."

I think I know this breed. They're the ones buying black baby clothes.

OK, here is my take on Hipsters. I lived in Austin which is a pretty big Hipster city and now live in Greenpoint which is Hipster-lite. I also lived with 2 Hipsters for a few months. These are just opinions, no offense to anyone.

-Most are White between 18-35 though I’ve seen tons of Asian and to a lesser extent Black and Hispanic Hipsters too.
-They generally come from suburban/rural areas anywhere in the US, the most pronounced Hipsters tend to be from Ohio, Iowa, the south, Oregon, and Cali.
-They are very educated or at least pseudo-educated meaning sounding smarter than they really are just to impress someone. Many majored in non-professional majors and probably are going to grad school for design, art, or something.
-Usually wear worn, tight clothing, ex. Guys: flannel shirts, Women: leg warmers with some type of dress over them. Skinny jeans are unfortunately popular with both sexes. I have to admit, I see lots of sexy Hipster chicks on the L train.
-Highly visible tattoos(both sexes) and piercings.
-Try to appear poor(it’s amazing how many people are hanging out doing nothing at 2pm on a Monday in Williamsburg) but the parents are keeping them well-funded. What poor person can afford a $2K apt in Williamsburg a month?
-Most are very liberal BUT have little experience with minorities therefore try very hard to find a token minority friend, lol. Note, you can easily sense the fear and nervousness of some when I’m around(Black) them.
-Very Judgmental.
-Many lack social skills, and some are just learning to socialize. Ex, was an introverted nerd in high school, now getting attention from the opposite sex in their newly found Hipsterism.
-Don’t try to argue with them or disagree, many are very stubborn and don’t like people who don’t agree with their viewpoints. Ask my conservative friend from Houston, they called him a Bush racist because he disagreed with them.
-They’re very clicky, they tend to follow trends like a religion, they seem more like followers than leaders. The “Scene” is huge with them.
-Like Indie-rock
-Many says that they are musicians and think they’re good because they have an inflated sense of worth.
-Many are vegans/vegetarians, some by choice, others just to follow what they’re friends are doing. They’ll be quick to criticize you if you eat something they don’t agree with.
-They love Trader Joe’s, Health Stores, Whole Foods and are anti-chain if not a store that benefits them.
-They love beer gardens and coffee joints.
-They love gritty areas, gives them street cred back home in Kansas. Graffiti in their hoods are a must. Gives them an edge.
-Some are cool though, they tend to be from LA, Chicago, or a large metro area.
-PBR or some obscure imported beer must be drank in order to be cool.

I like poor artists but not some affluent person with no talent trying to emulate someone. Also, if you want to see a young Yuppie, go to Murray Hill on the intersection of 34th st and 3rd ave.
