I'm going to be studying at Pace University this fall and my family and I will be in the city a few days before they help me move in. In order to keep costs low (because I know hotels can be super expensive, especially in Manhattan), I was wondering what the locals favorite cheap/budget hotels were?
We prefer not to stay in a hostel, but would like to keep costs down to around $150 a night. I saw some good reviews about the Carter Hotel and a few others, which were cheap and in Manhattan.
Check out the Bentley on East 62nd Street near the East River. Never stayed but have seen the lobby and roof top restaurant and it looks okay. The neighborhood is safe but you'll need a crosstown bus or a long walk to the Lexington Ave. subway to get around.
Look at the hotels in Long Island City- there's a Comfort Inn there for example- 1 stop subway into midtown. You can get standard rooms for $150 there.
Try Radisson on Lexington. I used it several times, it's noisy and small, but it's more or less clean and pretty cheap. Check the prices on the web, and choose your dates carefully, the same room can cost from $120 to $500.
Park Savoy in Manhattan is dirt cheap and about a block off of Central Park. It's very small, but it's close to all the major subway lines and would be good for someone visiting.
I stayed at St. Mark's Hotel for a few days once... its pretty small, but should be in your price range. They did have prostitutes although the man at the desk assured me that they are usually given rooms in the basement. At any rate I came back at all hours of the night and felt pretty safe. There's a lot of good restaurants on the street though and its only only about a 15-20 min subway ride to the University.
