I have to be at Battery Park around 8:30 am. I am driving in from PA and would really like some recommendations on where to park to pick up the subway to get to Battery Park. In short I am looking for the surest way to find a parking space with Subway access. I am traveling with school age girls and my wife.
Are you planning on driving into Manhattan or taking the PATH train from NJ?
If you are planning on dropping your car in Jersey and taking the PATH into Downtown (WTC STOP) then refer to the following.

Otherwise, there are parking lots close to or in Battery Park. New York Transportation: New York City Parking Information
There is a huge parking garage right outside of Battery Park, near the tunnel entrance. However, I'm not sure how full it gets by 8:30 AM, because I've never parked there.
If you drive into Manhattan and park in that garage (or anywhere in lower Manhattan), you can walk over to Battery Park and get in line to take the Circle Line Ferry to the Statue. The ferry will also take you to Ellis Island at no extra charge.
Be prepared for a long wait on line for the ferry (over an hour on a nice weather day). Thee is also a very extensive airport-like security check before you board the boat.
Another idea, since you're coming from South Jersey, is to go to Staten Island and take the ferry. There's parking at the terminal, the ferry ride is free, and you get bonus view of the Statue on the way over. The ferry terminal in Manhattan is right next to Battery Park.

I went to Statue of Liberty from Milford PA last year and the map quest directions were AWFUL. If you're just trying to get to the statue, you can leave from Liberty NJ, it is a mile from route 78. Parking is great, the ferry station is beautiful. I'm from Jersey so I know 78, Mapquest brought me through all kinds of Bergen county town down 17 etc. When we finally pulled in and I saw the sign for 78 I could have screamed - It took us two and a half hours to get down there and via 78 1 hour 20 mins to get back. If you don't need to go to the city for something else, I suggest you take 78 East follow your nose then follow the signs, it a relaxing trip and you'll be there before you know it.

Never EVER use mapquest.. it sucks..
Go google or yahoo maps.. straight and to the point directions.
If your taking NYC Mass transit, the 1, 9 or E train will get you down there. The one stops right out side of battery park.
BTW, Hit ellis island. Interesting place.. the only thing, half of the exhibts are either not in their showcases or broken.. they're letting it go to pot AGAIN.
as i understand it, if you use einstein's relativity theory to travel forward in time to the year 3978 AD, you will be able to park right next to the status of liberty, no mapquest needed.

Please don't tell people to take the #9 line; it was eliminated in 2005. And the E train will only take you as far as World Trade Center station.
If you're going to Battery Park, your two best choices by subway are:
1. #1 or R trains to Whitehall Street/South Ferry
2. #4 or 5 trains to Bowling Green.
