How about the Terminals at JFK and LGA, some good food and even get a drink of beer or a cocktail when entering or leaving NYC. Any way check out the Bohemian Beer Garden in Astoria. If this was the 19660s I would mentioned one dollar Belgium Waffles made famous during the Worlds Fair.

+1 for Bohemian Beer Garden. Very unpretentious. Great especially on a not-too-hot summer night.

Why???

The restaurants are not good. Amidst the many empty, for-rent store spaces are shops that can either be found in any mall, like Victoria's Secret or Aldo or the soon to close Barnes and Nobles. Throw in more hair and nail salons than any street could possibly need, and there you have it.

Is there something I'm missing here?

There are still some good restaurants on the side streets on the blocks immediately next to Austin St.
You also have a duplex movie theater on Austin Street and the multiplex Midway theater is also only a block away.
