Cut it to me straight and simple. A how-to for dummies. I'm traveling alone with one suitcase and one carry-on. Should I take the cab? Should I take the bus to the subway? I'm staying with a friend two blocks down from the Empire State Building. Is that stupid to travel that far with my luggage? I'm sure people do it everyday and I'm overthinking things. Ease my mind people.
The cab is the *easiest* way, but also the most costly.
Depending upon how big your carry-on is, the bus to the subway is really quite easy. I typically have a small suitcase and a backpack when I do it. Just take the Q33 bus from LGA to the Roosevelt Avenue station and take a Manhattan-bound F train to 34th Street-Herald Square. You'll only be out $2.50 total and the Q33 has luggage racks so it's really not too traumatic overall.
You can also take the NYAS coach bus to Penn Station, which would run you $5 inbound/$15 round-trip. It's less expensive than a cab, and a bit more convenient than switching transportation if your luggage is heavy or cumbersome.

Alternatively, get the M60 bus at the terminal, get off at Astoria Blvd. Take the N or Q, direction Brooklyn, change at 59th and Lexington to the 4 or 6 train, direction Brooklyn, and get off at 33rd Street.

Good luck and have a great time.
This too, but I've found the M60 to be a much slower ride than the Q33.

It is plain and simple. Pull out your smart phone and let Google map shows you multiple options. With GPS, you know exactly where you are if traveling above ground.
If you don't have a smart phone, get one now, don't leave home without it.

I will as soon as I fire Verizon at the end of my contract in March!!! I have a Blakcberry 8330 with Google Maps but I'm not too sure on the dependability of the public transit mode. We'll see.

Change in plans - I guess I'm staying a few blocks off of Columbus Circle. Where exactly is the stop for the M60 at La Guardia? Everytime I google map it in public transit mode it only gives me the option of the Q48 or the Q33. I found point A to point B directions on another site but Google Maps is the only thing I have on my phone so I'm trying to rely solely on that. I think I can get there this one time without the phone though - I just need help getting from the airport to my friends because it's the only time I have to do this alone.
So....with my obsessive googling over the last few days, here is my interpretation of the directions this site gave me....let me know if it sounds right:
From La Guardia take the M60 bus to W 125th & Fred Douglas Blvd, walk one block West look for enclosed staircase on corner, hop the A train (will it say downtown - I'm going south?) get off at columbus circle.

the M60 connects directly to the A and D trains. You can get off at St Nicholas Avenue and the A/B/C/D train entrance is right on the corner. You can access the uptown or downtown direction from any street entrance. Take the A or D train downtown to 59th Street - Columbus Circle. Only one stop on the A or D train, the next stop after 125th Street is 59th Street.

If you take the N or Q train from Astoria, either one will drop you off at Herald Square--one block west of the Empire State Building. You won't have any problem figuring out which direction to go. Just look up to the sky. You can't miss that building!
