How is this area? I have an appointment to see what looks to be a really nice apartment there tomorrow and I have only been up to the 92nd Street Y. That was at night and it seemed nice. Any thoughts?
The 90s on the Upper East Side is an incredibly unique area. There are a whole lot of very tall apartment buildings, lots of awesome restaurants and some of the best East River views IMO. You've got chains like Blockbuster, Starbucks, Gristedes, and McDonald's, as well as great little mom-and-pop places. There are gyms, it's usually pretty easy to find a cab, and the terrain is very unique - lots of hills. It's not touristy, it doesn't have that "snobby" air, and yet most people in the area are professionals and well mannered.
Now, the caveat is that applies to everything below and including 96th Street. Seriously, if you go up just one more block it's like you crossed into a magic portal or something. The area become super unsafe, full of seedy characters, and projects all over the place. You said the mid-90s, so I'm assuming that doesn't mean anything above 96.
But curiously enough, even though the low 90s are safer, there's not as much stuff there. That's because there are no subways there, and not as many high-rise structures. Low 90s are boring.
I know all this because I used to live at 101st Street (seems like a lifetime ago), and then moved to 78th Street. So I know everything in between pretty well.

Nothing to worry. It is a very good neighborhood. You will be very close to every thing, subway, Starbucks, library, museums, etc. The Carnegie Hill Historic District is right there. http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/download...negie_hill.pdf During the summer time, you can jog along the Reservoir in the Park. It is a nice way to meet other young boys and girls. Stroll up and down Park Ave is also very relaxing. How much is the rent? It won't be cheap.
