I'm moving to NYC in a few months for school, and I am looking for dog-friendly neighborhoods. By this, I mean places near parks/green spaces aka Central Park, etc. However, because I am a student and practically living off of loans, I know I probably can't afford anything in UES or UWS by Central Park. Any ideas for other places? I'd like to ideally be in a safe, affordable area that isn't too hard of a commute to Soho/Chinatown/Civic Center areas.

There are small parks and dog runs in nearly evey neighborhood- you don't have to live near Central Park to be near parkspace.

This. Virtually every park has a dog run.

I love living in the West Village, as I have access to two runs—Washington Square Park and Leroy Street—but it's not much more budget-friendly that the other neighborhoods you mentioned. You do have the Tompkins Square Park dog run in the EV.

Ahhh, good link, thanks! I was worried NYC would be like Boston with very little green space and pretty much 0 places dogs could go leashless and run around a bit.

No, it's really pretty great in most neighborhoods. Plus, with the population density here, most dog parks are always pretty crowded. My dog is happier here than he's ever been!

Also, some dog breeds have meet-up groups where, once every few months or so, they'll rent out a large play area for just dogs of that particular breed. We've been to a few of those and they've been really fun as well.
