You find this strange? Don't you fill out an application if you want a credit card? (Besides, with an application on record, you're in a lot better position if your card should get lost or stolen).
I'm just bustin balls, my dude. However I don't know anyone who does or has used this auto fill deal. Applications to ride the freakin train done blew my mind....
I've used EasyPay for several years. It's worth the 2 second "application" process - it's not like they interview you or anything like that! Just some basic info, and you're all set. Your MetroCard shows up in a few days, and you never have to worry about it again.
However, since I'm moving, I just wanted to switch from the pay-per-ride to the 30-day unlimited product, and they told me I had to fill out a new application and get a new card for that, you can't switch. All for the best really, since my pay-per-ride card has seen better days (but still works!)
Unlimited ride metrocards cards, weekly or monthly, are cheaper than individual fares the more you use them. If you use a card more than twice a day, I'd get one. Like if you stop between work and home for something, or go out on the weekends you really do save. The only catch is that if you use an unlimiated fare card at a station--or on a bus--you can't use it again there for like 15 or 20 minuites. So your boyfriend can't use it, hand it to you and let you go through the turnstile right behind him. You'd have to wait. I don't know what you mean by two credit cards. All you need to purchase is either a credit card or a bank (debit) card at the machines in the stations.
If one purchases a metrocard at a machine, one can also pay cash (meaning not only a credit or debit card).
Current break even for a monthly pass is 48 rides.
Whenever I buy one I wind up losing money so now when I get down to 2 or 3 rides I just add $19.05 cash at a booth and with the 5% that's exactly 16 senior rides.
I read an article around the time of the last fare hike that said most people who buy a monthly pass DO NOT make out. I can't vouch for or against that but it's clearly true for me.

bingo. 2 rides a day, 5 days a week working stiffs won't be able to pass 48 for sure
In addition to the work commute (22 days if no holidays) you've also got to add some weekend travel.
And you can lose big: My first monthly...took a trip to Astor Liquors and got sick on the way home. FLu had me home for 3 weeks.
When you win with 50 rides, you are making pennies.
I have a saleswoman friend though who sees 5 and 6 clients a day...so for her, a monthly is a no-brainer, but she is not the common case.
