Well, I was in the underground walk-way going towards Chase Plaza (I worked in the small building) and I smelled that something was burning. I found out what was going on when I got to the lobby of my building.
I was 3 blocks away at the WFC when the planes hit. I was standing in front of City Hall on Broadway asking a cop if the Brooklyn Bridge was open to walk when we both heard a strange, eerie sound that I can never describe, but still kinda haunts me. We both turned to look and were greeted by a mass of people running AT us telling us to run. That was the first tower going down. I pretty much ran the entire way to the Manhattan Bridge. I was mid-span on that when the second one came down. Awful. As someone else said, Brooklyn was littered with pieces of paper from offices.
I was on Barclay Street when the people were falling/jumping from the towers. That was the worst of it. And the people standing in the window frames, so high up, waving shirts to signal for help. That and the endless trail of smoke that kept coming out of the towers. The whole day was surreal. The sky so perfectly blue. You kept waiting for Bruce Willis or Arnold to swoop in and save the day. Or at least I did. It just didn't seem real.
I was still home in the Village when the first plane struck. I grabbed my camera and zoom lens....

Wonderful photos. I especially like the unique view of the Plaza and smaller buildings.
Has anyone any eyewitness accounts, on what the situation was right outside off the main lobby off the north tower before the second plane hit? Chaos?, where there cars on fire, smoke comin from the lowest floors, much debris? Smell of jet fuel, people already jumping, how many fire trucks, body parts, etc...
I'm doing my own 9/11 investigation and this is sadly important material.
A friend, who was killed when the second plane hit and the fireball traveled down to the B2 level, was outside when the first plane and called his wife. All we have heard of that was there was debris and fire falling. I'm sure he saw a lot, but probably didn't want to tell her. He ran back into the South Tower to do emergency shut downs. No one wanted to press her about the conversation, as it was their last.
My friend exited the South Tower only about 10 minutes before it fell. As she was running out, the firemen where were yelling to not look and just run like hell. It was chaos. She saw newpapers placed around and noticed red spots everywhere. And load bangs. Her brain didn't process it immediately - the brain is a wonderful thing. Later, she realized the red spots were body parts and blood, the newspapers where being placed by the firemen and police to try to hide the body parts from the people running out of the building. The bangs were the bodies hitting the ground.
True, one NYPD officer died when a jumper hit him.
I have video made by by Jules an Gedeon Naudet, who where doing an documentary about NYFD, at the time. They drove with fire chief Pfeifer(whos brother perished in tower 1) He and an engine and ladder company was the first on scene right outside the north tower main lobby. The receptionist runs forward and tells on which floor the fire is, but the elevators are out of function. What can you do?
I'm sure that most of you have already seen this video, but for you that haven't check it out.
