This is going to be my first time moving to another state. Can someone please let me know where I should live that is safe and affordable while working in Manhattan? I heard south brooklyn would be the best place to live...how safe is it around there and which neighborhoods are good to consider? also how far would it be to the closest grocery stores and Manhattan? I am looking to rent a 1 bedroom apt around $1500-2000/month...thanks!

The median rent for a one bedroom apartment in Manhattan is a little over $2700 - so Manhattan is out.

As for other neighborhoods, in the other boroughs, there are quite a few, and I'll let those more familiar with them do the recommending.

Having said that, I can tell you that you're NEVER far from a store. It just doesn't happen in NYC. That's why it's easy to live here without a car. You're not planning on bringing a car, are you? Because just to PARK it is at LEAST $400/month (and frequently more).

south brooklyn is solid, just a longer commute to the city.
areas like bensonhurst and gravesend, very safe and can still find 1BR for 1000 or less

I second that -- I live in Gerritsen Beach. Two BR place for $1200/mo. Lots of families and single-family homes. However the commute is 1.5 hours to Midtown. Also, in Southern Brooklyn you won't find a trendy or chic lifestyle. But there are lots of good restaurants and recreational opportunies, especially if you like the ocean.

Owning a car here is actually do-able. In fact, a car will come in handy on the weekends or if you want to go out late.

You also will find that everyone here is a native. Not many re-locators like you'll find in Manhattan and the trendier parts of Brooklyn. However, I've found everyone in the neighborhood to be very friendly and accepting and we've made some true friendships here - even though we talk with a funny-sounding upstate accent

Other solid Southern Brooklyn neighborhoods are Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Midwood, Marine Park, and Sheepshead Bay (which is heavily Russian)

If you want twice the space for half the money and like to live in a quieter area and maybe even have a little backyard -- the longer commute is worth it. If you want to be in "the center of it all" - then maybe Southern Brookyn isn't for you - but be prepared to pay much more.

safe, sure... just dodge the flying lugies from the chinese women... dirty as all hell though. and don't expect to find much amazing cuisine beyond pizza or chinese takeout.

Oh, and while you're at it NostrandAv, head down 86th street and make a left on Avenue U. Cross Coney Island Avenue and take a leisurely stroll, up Avenue U to Ocean Avenue. The sheer variety of the indescribable on those short 10 blocks will astound you.

In mumus sans brassieres? I hope those aren't old Russian women. If one of those women moves too quickly sideways, you stand a fair chance of being clobbered by those udders.

are you kidding? lol. you know it's less fun on the weekends because the train service is local for the most part. also bring clothes pins for your nose if it's hot out - the garbage on the street is rather pungent.
