Anyone else the same way? My main form of commute around Brooklyn and to Manhattan is the subway. I rarely ever take the bus as well. If not the subway, I'll ride my bike. But the point is, I've never once hailed a taxi. And this includes many nights spent out drinking in the city and taking the train back at 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 in the morning. Weeknights, weekends, whatever.
The reason I ask is because it's always felt like a very un-New York thing to do to me. Yeah, ridiculous notion, but none of my core group of friends has ever hailed a cab thanks to a 24/7 subway. But I was out recently with an acquaintance, and we were coming out of a bar and she INSISTED that we take a taxi. Threw me completely off guard. And she lives in Manhattan! (Where we were anyway.)
Why is it un-NY to take a taxi? That is so bizarre to me. I don't rely on taxis and take them rarely, but for example, when I get out of work after midnight or later, as a female I feel more comfortable taking a cab home into Queens, rather than spend 30 minutes on the subway that time of night. Likewise if I'm going out and I'm one place, and decide to go somewhere else, I will occasionally take a cab if it will be faster.
They are pricey if you do it too often, but there are times when I have just not felt like dealing with the subway construction delays if its late at night.
So, did you hail the cab yourself when your friend insisted that you both take one? Next time you're out late, I think you should hail a cab just because. It will make you feel fancy.
It isn't. I already acknowledged what a strange notion it is. But the crowd I've grown up with--I can't recall a single friend who's ever suggested taking a taxi over a bus or train. It's honestly just a very foreign concept to me, which is strange considering I live in Taxi City. We're probably just cheap bastards. lol
I'm with you USUL. I have not hailed a cab for myself in my entire life. I have hailed them for some prima donnas too good for public transportation, but not gotten in myself.
If every cab in town were ground up and recylcled, we'd have a better city.
I have only hailed a cab twice in my four-ish years here. Once was because my parents were visiting and they thought it would be a very quintessential NY thing to do, and once because I was carrying home a bunch of heavy bags and figured it'd be easier. Subway is great!
I'm a cheap bastard so I don't use cabs either. Although one time I did have to hail a cab for my black friend who kept having vacant cabs pass him by. I told him to hide in a corner until it stops, it worked like a charm!
My main issue with cabs is that they're kind of a rip off no matter what city you live in. Sometimes you just gotta do it though. Still cheaper than owning a car, and still cheaper than a DUI if you've went and gotten a little boozy.
depending where you are, i noticed it is cheaper to call for a taxi instead of hailing a taxi. Hailing a taxi, they charge you like 2.50 just to walk in the cab
