A mob of idiots that did not maintain a peaceful atmosphere at all.
I saw nobody get "beat up" at all. They were restrained....dragged.....ha, you'd think they would have the brains to cooperate with the police.
You get what you deserve. Those cops are excellent.
But then, they proved that already, 10 years ago....and now these punks disrespect them.
I remember the protests back in the 60's. People spitting on Viet Nam war veterans, while preaching peace, love and flower power.
^^^^^I wholeheartedly agree!

To OP, yes I am OK with the police arresting and assaulting these people, thing is they are not innocent as you would call them. These unruly protesters are not even New Yorkers, just a bunch of transplants, get real, they got what they deserved. It's simple, police is giving you an order, obey it and move the hell out, if you don't like it and/or feel that your civil rights are being violated, file a friggin complaint, but you can't fight law enforcement in this manner, defying the police, screaming, kicking and creating such a public disturbance, fools!

It's interesting to see how so many people side with the police even in the face of evidence that they have acted like goons in this case. There are now several videos around the web showing a fuller picture of what happened and it's clear that the police deputy inspector that pepper-sprayed the woman in the video did it without provocation. It is also clear from the videos that other police officers were acting properly and that it was this one derranged individual who decided to assault this woman. So, why did the NYPD spokesman find it necessary to justify this brutal act by lying about what transpired before the incident in question? Why is it so difficult to just admit that this one guy abused his power? What I have to wonder is: if they are so quick to lie about this, how can they be trusted to do the right thing when a police officer abuses his power in situations that are less public and obvious than this one or when the stakes are higher?

I also find it disturbing that some people here are so quick to attack the victim. What the hell does it matter if the woman was yelling dumb things, if the protestors were all transplants, if you don't like protests, etc, etc?

^^^^This is a nation of laws, not a third world country, we all learned from an early age to obey and respect law enforcement. These protesters were looking for trouble as they clearly confronted police, then want to be the victim when they got their just. Please!

OMG! I had totally overlooked that!

I had forgotten that if you're not in your hometown the police can and must strip you of your rights, beat and arrest you. Especially in New York where Transplants have been causing nothing but problems since the 17th century.

You are repped sir!

My point is that the NYPD have never been saints like one of the previous posters was making it sound.

But to address your point more directly, why are you bringing up other institutions when we're talking about the police? Is it to use some sort of equivalency argument to show that corruption is a normal occurrence in large institutions? If so, you're right in that some level of corruption should be expected; but you're wrong if you think that corruption in other municipal agencies is as insidious or as dangerous for the people of this city as corruption in the police force. A corrupt law enforcement officer has the power to ruin your life in many different ways that members of other municipal/federal/corporate organizations simply don't.

BTW, the NYPD is not so different in this regard. Police organizations throughout the world have historically been extremely prone to corruption. It is a problem inherent to law enforcement institutions where the workforce has a relatively low level of education.

This is also a democracy. People have the right to protest. The laws that these individuals were breaking did not call for a violent response from the police.

Also, get your analogies in order FFS. Violent police reactions to peaceful demonstrations are a FEATURE of third world countries, not of developed ones.

Mao Zedong, Stalin, and other revolutionaries suffered genuine physical hardships in their long struggles for their cause.

And these spoiled white kids complain?

If they're genuine revolutionaries, don't they need a bit of toughening up, instead of regular supplies of pizza paid for with credit cards, and visits from the goddess Susan Sarandon?

These kids remind me of an episode in the 1960s. The socialist intellectual Irving Howe was berated by a young activist for not being sufficiently committed to the cause. Irving replied: "Twenty years from now, I'll still be a socialist. You, you'll be a dentist in Scarsdale."

I similarly bet that 10 years from now, those kids will be dentists in Grosse Pointe or Palo Alto or White Plains.

When people say stuff like this, I always wonder if the police really care. I prefer cops who don't take things personal, AKA, cops who could careless whether some yahoo respects them or not.

So true. The bleeding heart communist socialist progressive liberals would probably retort in their "pseudo intellectual" manner that, for example, in East Germany anno 1989 a peaceful revolution took place that sent an entire government, as well as a wall, crumbling down, but let's be honest here. Those kids in that video MUST be rich, MUST be transplants and thus the combination of both makes us despise them and their cause. And rightfully so! People who marched and protested 20 years ago in East Germany and ended an oppressive regime are, too, dentists somewhere in Berlin or Dresden now enjoying their new found freedom they fought for. Fake revolutionaries they are!

Us here in the good ol' US of A, we can only laugh at that. If it's not drones, bombs, pepper spray or, at the very least, a wild west type beat-down, we won't take anything seriously.

Oh, wait. So, these kids actually were attacked by the police. That means it legitimizes their protest a little, following your logic, right? You couldn't have meant that. They are white rich kids! Transplants at that! The devil personified! Never forget that!
