I want to move to New York City within the year. What is the most important thing to think about before moving to NYC? I doubt I could live in Manhattan due to the cost, but Brooklyn is an option.
Can anyone help me get started? Maybe recommend areas to look at, companies that are hiring, things to think about?
Thanks for anyone that can help point me in the right direction.

I should have given more info. I do have a college degree and a little savings. I have always had low level office jobs (admin asst, accounting) so never made a lot of money. It's just that I hate where I live now (North Carolina), and need to be back in civilization. I'm a single mom, and my daughter wants to live in NYC, and I'm ok with that. She will graduate high school in June.
I have done research but really I'm just looking for some advice that the normal search wouldn't tell me. Like good, safe places to live, companies that might be hiring, anything else I'm not thinking of, yada yada yada.
I was actually born in NY, outside of NYC. I grew up in Long Island so I would say I'm pretty aggressive. Had some problems adjusting to where I live now, they didn't understand my humor..LOL...
Its going to be tough, but you can find that work in NYC. Very common downtown and near Wall Street for clerical and secretery positions.
Consider moving to Long Island, Staten, or BKLYN.
Will your daughter be going away to college? Working?
Just be prepared to get a lot less sq footage for your money than you do now.
