Depending on where you will be living, a car could be helpful.

I drive, and during certain times of the day, it is much faster/more convenient than the train. Granted, those times are between 11am-3pm and 7pm-6am. But I live near several highways so, I can get to any part of the city in 20 minutes, where as on the train, could take hours.

Other times I prefer the express bus, or the subway, not so much the MNR anymore.

If you are living in Manhattan (except way uptown or harlem) ditch the car. Get zipcar membership.

If You are in Queens or BK, SI, BX, keep the car. Just be aware of Alternate Side of the Street Parking (where you have to move your car for street cleaning sometimes up to twice a week)

People today are glamorizing the subway- but it all depends on your commute.

Having to change trains, or rely on some bad lines is just awful- while if you live on a major line, it can be quite convenient.

Driving is terrible in downstate NY, but if you -HAVE- to do it, you don't really have a choice in the matter... so you do it.

Also if you're the kind of person who is a car enthusiast, and love to drive- then this could be trouble. Car costs here are HIGH. Parking and Insurance can run you $500+ a month. Tolls are ridiculous and don't go towards anything but subsidizing other peoples mass transit, which still somehow loses tons of money a year.

You'll figure it out. Though it would pay to find out where you expect to live, and where you expect to work and make a decision based on that.

I live in Manhattan, own a car- and can go weeks without using the subway. However some times of day, in many areas- it just makes absolutely no sense to try and park a car.

One of the many reasons why I hate the DC metrorail here.

The subway can be a pain sometimes but so is driving. I LOVE not having a car and having the ability to get to so many places so easily via public transportation. Btw, totally depends where in Queens or Brooklyn you live(refering to a post above) if keeping the car would be worth it. I vote not at all for insurance, parking and vandalism alone, but I know at least in my neighborhood in Queens people tell me parking is awful (sometimes takes 1 hr to find a spot)....that wouldn't be worth it to me. Zip car so much easier.

When I was on vacation I took the subways in NY prior and after the new years of 2012. It was ridiculously overcrowded even around 11am. Yes there where the incompitent people who would take up half the pole, or stand in front of the door, and the emergency exit abusers. But I still enjoyed every second of the rides from Astoria Queens(?) to Manhatten. I even got lost and three decent men named Pooch, Key,and Juan, gave me directions back to my Hotel and offered me my brother and my little

cousin some money to warm ourselves back up with some hot coco. I called my grandpops from Juan's phone, and my pops asked if he could speak to him Juan gave him directions as to where we were. My pops picked us up and we shook hands with the gentelmen like 3 times and waved good bye to them twice. Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you that the reason why we got lost was because my pops took a chance at getting inside the cart WHILE IT WAS CLOSING. My pops shoulder gut pinched by the doors and my cousin reached

in to stop the door, it pinched him too and it caused my cuisin to pull out his arm as if the cart was a hot pit of fire. When the door closed I screamed in truly the most desperate mannwer ever "what do we do!?!?" He shrugged his shoulders, raised his eyebrows with uncertainty, and gestured his palms out above his hips. It was the perfect body language of I don't know. People stared at me my cousina and my brother while we walked out the station. No one asked if we needed help. We asked help from Cops

to metro station officials and they all said we can't help you. I explained that I was lost to the people on the streets and they all refused to let me use thier cell phones when I requested to use it. Then I saw two short hispanics and a large black guy all laughing and talking aloud. They were Pooch, Key, and Juan.

I suppose so. But then again, there are cabs. Subways are so hectic. The kind of people on the 7 train i deal with everyday is unexplainable.
