Hi,

I am from philadelphia. I will be going to JFK airport, NY to recieve one of my friends. The problem is that her flight is arriving at 4:15AM in the morning. So I was wondering if its safe to travel from Penn Station to JFK via subway and AirTrain at night time?

Take the Long Island Railroad from the Air Train in Jamaica. It's far faster than the subway at that hour and safer. (MTA Long Island Rail Road)

+1. The subway will be pretty safe, but service is very, very slow at that hour.

By the way, I would print out a map of the Air Train before you go. The system is very poorly marked and I found it quite confusing.

Personally, I wouldn't ride around on the A train through Brooklyn in the secluded hours of the night.

I wouldn't ride any train through Brooklyn in the secluded hours of the night. No chance you could pony up the $45 cab fare for the ride there?

Take the LI RR, there's not even a chance the correct trains will be running that hour and trying to figure out the correct one is quite confusing. As long as you're smart, not dripping in jewelry or engaged in a staring contest with the other patrons you'll be fine.

Like some others have said, I'd take the LIRR instead. The Airtrain is safe at that hour but personally, I wouldn't take the A at that hour if I could avoid it.

I'm not so sure the Jamaica LIRR station's all that great at that hour. Seemed a bit creepy to me when I went through there around midnight once. I'd be thinking about taking an airport bus from midtown if I had to get out there at 4 a.m.

Well it's in Jamaica so I could see that, and maybe you where there around the time they were building the extension. It looked creepier back then. The times I've been there it's always seemed safe though.
