Since you didn't provide any details or photos all I could do is use my imagination. My mental image says NO...It's not cute at all, and I think you may have a rodent problem!

But I don't completely understand your thread. If you want us to define what someone else meant by describing your apartment as cute, that's a bit of a challenge, since we've never seen it and have no description of it. "Cute" can mean it's small, "cute" can mean it looks nice, "cute" can mean they have nothing else polite to say about it!

Or cute can mean just that...cute. People have described my apt. as cute but then again it is decorated. Since your apt. is not decorated, I'd say at a guess that they maybe referring to the size of your apt. Saying your apt. is tiny or small can be taken as a diss or a put-down, so cute is a more polite term. Course I could be wrong. If you really want to know, go ask them.

so is that a euphemism for "not cute", "small" something else? I want it to mean small because that's the word I would come up with
"Cute" and "cozy" are euphemisms for "You poor dear, the place is so SMALL!"

Next step up is "nice."

Your friends think you live in too small of space, but probably look at it more like "whatever floats your boat" then "what were you thinking?".

They are saying your place is small in a polite way in other words.

What I was going to say.

cute = small (too small for anyone)
nice = its small but liveable, possibly for them
OK = They'd live there if there were some amazing amenity/low rent

I get "HOLY ****! This place is huge!" When I have people up.
Having lived in a 3 story semi attached home, it is "nice sized", but if I compare to my last 5 apts, yeah - this place is freakin' huge.

I heart the Bx

This is place is huge = This is a relatively a large space for NYC standards.

Yet for a guy from the South or Midwest, your place might not be big at all, let alone "huge".

It's all relative.

yeah thanks, I had a cookie cutter McMansion in the suburbs so I am used to a completely different reaction

"omg ur rich" no, no just a subprime mortgage and the land was cheap

"this place is huge you don't need to enter that contest at the mall" well....

so when I open the door and routinely keep hearing 'cute' in a place I would say is 'small' and not decorated, I definitely needed someone to reinforce what I was already thinking

I dont feel compelled to make excuses about the size of the space so I think people would be better off saying what they mean

Do you like your place? Would you like it more if you decorated?

Why do you care if someone said it looks cute? Seems pointless to waste time on thinking about that. If you like it, you like it!

I like my place

I would just like to be aware if people were using euphemisms around me. Especially when they are using adjectives I wouldn't have thought of to describe something.
