Simple, you don't need much money to live off of once you pay your rent and bills. NYC has a lot going on and as much as people whine and cry it's such an expensive city, it can be and it can't be. Yes the rents are crazy here and I will not argue that but this city is very livable otherwise.

Yeah I mean, I hear what you're saying. But 1,600 times 12 is $19,200 (before utilities). $30,000 after taxes leaves you with pennies to eat on. And you said you're making less than 30K?

I actually eat quite well. Healthy and organic. No processed food, fast food, or $1 pizza. I just know how to shop well. If it means hitting several stores then so be it and that's what I do. I always say this city can be as cheap or as expensive as you make it. Most people don't believe I make as little as I do and are convinced that I make at least $50,000. I laugh and say I wish. I'm just very good with my money and know how to spend it and save it.

So you're able to pay your utilities, cell phone, and eat healthy and organic on what is probably $2,000 a year?

How do you get $2000? My rent is $19,000 a year. I have more then $2,000 left to spend on bills and food. But yes, I can pay everything and still eat well within my income range. And yes I do pay everything myself and don't get any outside help unless you count the xmas gift card to trader joes for $50. I'm one person, my phone bill and con ed are not that much. And you can eat good food and healthy when you make food at home for not that much.

If you make "less than 30k a year" and then get taxed on that, that doesn't leave a whole lot. Unless when you're under 30k you really don't get taxed at all. That might be the variable I'm missing here.

I'm not doubting you, I'm just trying to understand. I eat healthy and cook most meals myself. It's a little cheaper, but can still get expensive if you're buying good stuff. Especially around here.

Nycangel, would you mind giving us a little run-down of your budget?

I am always looking for ways to cut costs and would love to know how you do it. I would really appreciate it.

It always amazes me how some people cannot believe that it's possible to live on a shoestring budget and eat well and be able to enjoy things. Actually, I take that back, with some of the threads on here where people state that they spend $900 (or something like that) on bars a WEEK I can see how they don't believe it. Just goes to show you, there are spenders and there are savers...
