New York City being among the greatest cities in the world has unfortunately generally dirty and bad subway/metro system compared to many other cities in the world with similar, higher or slightly lower population. Yes, it runs 24/7/365, is affordable, has plenty of stations, and runs everywhere, but I'll rather have a MUCH cleaner, nicer stations and better and more modern train tracks with closing for few hours every overnight than what the city has today. Very sad.

It's disgusting using the subway system in most stations... what a shame!:/

Remember that NYC subway is one of the oldest the world. (I am not sure it is the oldest or the London Underground is older.) So one has to make do what there is since the MTA never has enough money to make too many drastic improvements.

Sorry but not an excuse. They should get aid from the city/state/federal government or other places. I'm sure many of us are willing to pay slightly more for major improvements. Everything needs to be upgraded once in a while.... that's why roads, bridges, houses and other things gets makeover.

You'll be paying slightly more no matter what. They are always short on money as it is. It's not that simple to get aid from the city, state or the government to pretty up an enormous subway system during a recession. They do upgrade it equipment-wise because the old crap is always breaking down, but to make the entire subway system look clean and new would take major capital. Not to mention delays. The service gets constantly interrupted as it is by work and construction. It's pretty gross in some places, but overall it's not THAT bad.

if they managed $$ better and didn't have to pay overpay these unions more than triple what they should be getting, then yes, i think it would be cleaner and have $$ for upgrades

The MTA is one of the most consistent transit systems in the world. I'm good, as long as it takes me where I want to go.

As someone else said, the MTA is one of the worst managed agencies we have...It took almost 30 years just to be able to understand the "what stop is next announcement" on the loudspeaker...
