ive given the super $20-$25 for the AC(to both remove and put in) since ive often tipped him for other things he's done as well

what would be a good tip for the neighbor? i might give him more since this would be a one time thing
If you was my neighbor I'd do it for free. The most I would take is a cold beer (if offered) but if you live in the same building or complex its family. You don't have to tip your neighbors. I hooked up my neighbor's flat screen and didn't expect anything. Didn't get anything either. Did it out of the fact just cause she's #5B and I'm #5C.

As crazy as this may seem, I agree with this ^^.

OP, tipping seems awkward. If you feel compelled to give money then say to your neighbor, "hey, what would you charge for something like that?" If he gives you a price quote, I'd be a bit taken back (ONLY if this wasn't his line of work or if he wasn't a handyman or something). If he says "a cold beer" then offer him just that. If he says he wants nothing then leave it at that and maybe pick up a DD or Starbucks giftcard. Neighbors do things for each other without expecting anything, like 7th Floor said.

rlrl,

Make sure that is tipped SLIGHTLY downwards to the outside so you don't get any water into the apartment. This is a window unit right?
Part of normal maintenance is IF you can get the front off, make sure that there is a small passage to get water from inside to ourtside and it is kept open. After a few years this hole typically gets clogged with dirt and can giive you a puddle.

How can you slant a window unit when installing a bracket?

the super was willing to install it right from the box but i couldn't find him yesterday so PC Richard is gonna install it tomorrow. its gonna cost me more but im tired of chasing people for this as i just had cancer surgery (results negative) and ive had enough. ill pay the extra to have it installed by the company this time around

i don't know if the old unit was salvageable or not after 7 years; the super's wife was overwhelmed by all the water inside and her husband (the super) was at his nite job so he wasn't available to look at it so she just chucked it out. i needed both windows to be open so i could run a fan the night is started leaking

it worked well for 7 years, do you think the drainage pan just needed to be drained? the super put it in the window 2 or 3 years ago and i just let it sit there. is it possible leaving it in the window during the winters damaged it?

Ohhh, rlrl, sorry to hear about your surgery but glad to hear it's negative

My dad always left the ac in the diningroom window but would cover it up from the outside. The unit is big and heavy...it's one of those old Friedricks (sp) and they've had it for over 20 yrs. The smaller ones in the bedrooms would come out and he'd store them in the house. Recently my brother and I were talking about ac's and he said the ac they had in the apartment ended up getting all moldy and mildewy because he left it in the window all year round. He never drained it or covered it. So, it's possible with yours if it always stayed in the window, that might have damaged it. My daughter's ac is in the wall and we don't cover it but I notice when we first turn it on it has a bit of funk to it but once we clean the filters and we let it run, it works just fine. I think 7 years is a bit soon for an ac to crap out.
