Could someone please give tips on good African (Senegalese, Cameroonian, Ghanaian, Congolese, etc) restaurants in New York? Where do they tend to cluster? Which dishes in which particular restaurants would you recommend? How much would a meal usually cost?

Fort Greene has a few places that I've really enjoyed- this article lists three of them that are located within walking distance of each other.

http://events.nytimes.com/2009/02/18...unde.html?_r=0

it also mentions Madiba which is on Dekalb- they focus on South African. ABistro is no longer in the location in the article- they are on Dekalb and Vanderbilt now. I believe the other two are still there but I haven't been to the area in a few months.

Awash in Harlem is not bad for Ethiopian.

Awash Ethiopian Restaurant - New York City, NY

Would recommend the Sambusas for app. For entree try any of the Wat's.

I'm West African (Ghanaian). IMO the best West African restaurant in all of NYC is Buka which is a Nigerian restaurant in Fort Greene.

It's under new management so the food doesn't take forever. I've loved everything I've had there.
There are several decent Ghanaian restaurant in the Bronx where I live. Papaye is my favorite: Papaye Restaurant - Concourse - Bronx, NY but I don't eat there a lot because I can make my own

There are tons of good Senegalese restaurants around 116th street in Harlem. My favorite is Le Baobab for fish and rice (tcheboujenne).

West African main plates are usually around $10. Happy eating!

I haven't been yet, but had put this Liberian restaurant in Queens on my list to try sometime when I'm feeling adventurous.

Although I haven't been here personally, I've heard a restaurant by the name, Accra, in Morris Heights, Bronx has decent Ghanaian food. I think a classmate told me it's very affordable for a meal, so I'm going to guess around $10, more or less.

Burka is good. My favorite Nigrian dish is pepper soup and the do a good version at Buka. I also really like a dish called suya. Buka also serves suya. Joloff is also another popular West African restaurant in Brooklyn. It's Senegalese. Joloff Restaurant - Bedford Stuyvesant - Brooklyn, NY . Joloff has a stage and you might want to check them out on a night they have a performance.
