First thing Monday morning go to the unemployment office to start collecting your benefits. This isn't the end of the world although it may feel like it, just keep your head together. After you come from the unemployment office proceed to the employment office where they'll have job listings. In the meantime sign up with some temp agencies for clerical work or any type of work to carry you over.
Go to your LL and explain that you hit a rough spot and you'll pay what you can (I know this sucks) and that you'll be willing to pay extra once you get another full-time job. In the meantime look for alternate housing if this isn't acceptable to your LL. Start asking friends or inquiring about shelters.
Whatever you do don't panic actually this might be the best time of the year to lose a job, seriously. UPS always hires at this time of year, so does the post office for seasonal work. This is the time you hustle and don't sit still feeling sorry for yourself, something will eventually come through.
You have to work longer than a month to collect don't you/
You really expected a political campaign job to be secure? And on top of that, your plan was to move into 'the arts'? I think you need to reevaluate your goals if money is an issue...
you right. a political fund raising job can not be viewed as a long term profession.
you really need alot more to hang your hat on.
one of the reasons nyc typically has higher unemployment then the country is because of the number of no and low skilled jobs we have here. people move here all the time for these low end jobs and either get fired, quit or the jobs vanish leaving them stranded.
To qualify you need a quarter of earnings in the last 5 and a year's total that is 1.5 times this amount. Unfortunately it will be several weeks before your benefits start coming in so you will need to beg borrow or steal to make your rent. Does your employer owe you anything? If so, pay your rent and go out and buy 20 bags of ramen for $5.
Reality check: you will not find a job in this market very quickly.

Go to a temp agency. I highly recommend Randstad. They have a lot of high paying (relatively, of course) jobs and can probably get you started pretty quickly on something that at least somehow relates to your resume. Good luck
I know this is not helpful, but your former employer sounds shady to me. I'm assuming that "having a bad week" means not meeting a quota? A reputable organization would not fire you after only one month for having a bad week.
Take your highest quarter and divide by 26 for your weekly compensation.
(That $9 an hour would translate to an unemployment check of about $180 a week.)
