We currently live in Queens and have done for the last ten years; I'm trying to find a small plot of land no more than 70 mins outside the city, so that we can still commute to work, and can build a small house on.

I wanted to do it without a mortgage, so don't wan to spend anymore than $20,000 on the land.. obviously somewhere safe. I know it's doable, even if i have to check plots every day for the next year, maybe i'll get lucky.

We have one small child. I'm open to anywhere in NY, CT and NJ, even PA if it's commutable.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Maybe you should post in the NYS forum, instead of NYC?

I don't think people understand his question.

My interpretation:

I'm looking for a plot of land.
I want to build a house on it.

If the above is right you need to ask people in a real estate forum. Most people just rent or mortgage. They don't build houses.

You asked for places within 70 miles. Maybe you should read this article NY Times: Martz Trailways Bus from Mount Pocono, Pa., to the Port Authority in Manhattan so you can see that people's ideas vary on what the definition of commutable means.

Edit: Sorry, I see now that I mis-read your post and you asked for 70 minutes not miles. Well, in any case, the article might be good for you to see.
