Does anyone actually keep pets in a studio apartment? Seems like that would be cruel. We live in a one bedroom apartment and work from home and the cat already barely has enough space to run from one window to another.

We have a cat in our studio apartment. I think a cat is fine for a studio, but probably not a dog. Before moving to NYC, our cat had half of a house to run through, so I think it shocked him a bit to move somewhere so small. I don't think its cruel, but you do need to get feather toys and get the cat jumping and running around the little space that there is to wear him/her down.

it depends on the pet. Not all pets need a lot of exercise. We have a boston terrier in our one bedroom. Just from taking him out on a few walks a day is more than enough exercise for him because the boston terrier breed doesn't need a lot.

At one point I had a cat in a large studio but it was an older cat. She seemed perfectly happy.

I have a friend with a pitbull mix in a studio - it's also a pretty big studio. They're very active though so the dog definitely gets a lot of exercise.

I personally think its cruel to have any animal in a small space. Doesn't matter the size of the animal. Think how you would feel being in your apartment all the time or only let out for two walks around the block a day on a leash.
That being said I know people with cats in studio apartments. One has 2! The people I know with dog live in 1 bedrooms.

For too many animals here, the alternative is death at the city shelter. They hold the dumped animals for a day or something. Many days they have killed 30 or 40 cats, or 250-300 a week ....

Or death on the streets if you live in Harlem, and other areas as well I would imagine. Dumping animals onto the streets is a hobby here, along with littering. Just the way some people do things. The phrase is "putting it out."
