My family is going to New York City and we want to stay in Brooklyn. What are good, safe areas for hotels that are convenient to mass transit? What reasonably priced hotels would you recommend?

super 8 brooklyn is a good idea Super 8 Brooklyn (NY) - Hotel Reviews - TripAdvisor. it's on 3rd ave, not a few blocks from park slope, a nice area with many restaurants. the super 8 is around the corner from the r line. you could also look at others, or consider jersey city.

What's your definition of reasonable?

if i'm right, that's over by brooklyn college. to get there from the super 8, you'll have to board the r, go for one stop to atlantic terminal (transfer is free) and take the 2 to flatbush/brooklyn college.

that's reasonable? according to their website, many rooms are 3-4-500 a night!

I would say 200-250 a night is reasonable.

That seems like a pretty low price point, but according to Tripadvisor, it is do-able. I found 28 hotels in Brooklyn that say they are $175 to $250 a night. However, once you investigate further, you see that the hotels have a wide range of prices -- like Hotel Le Jolie in Williamsburg is between $211 and $453 per night.

Brooklyn Hotels: Compare 47 Hotels in Brooklyn, with 6,378 Reviews | TripAdvisor

I think Tripadivsor is a good place to research hotels, since clicking on the map will show you if the hotel is near transit, and reading the reviews will give you some sense of the value. One caveat is that like every review site, there are some fake reviews. When I use this site, I only pay attention to reviews that are written by reviewers that have 5+ reviews. A reviewer who joins a site to post one 5-star review is probably a fake.

Some of the hotels look nice but are not in the best/most convenient locations. Just because a hotel is in Brooklyn doesn't mean it's going to be close to anything of interest or value.
