I asked myself this question as well. There are a few take out places here that use them and I hate just throwing them out but I don't want my personal things smelling like what I ate the night before, so in the garbage they go.
We eat lots and lots of eggs and I hate filling the landfills with Styrofoam...but I guess there's no easy way to recycle the stuff.
So garbage it is.
You'd think with all the newspaper wastes the City generates that cardboard egg cartons would be the rule, especially with that appropriate gray color.

I get my eggs in cardboard, typically. Styrofoam recycling could be on the horizon - we just went from recycling only #1 and 2 plastics to recycling all rigid plastics, so there's hope.
Do you live near any preschools? Egg cartons are great for children's crafts; they might want them if you offer

For the same reason I don't buy them wrapped in tissue paper or banana leaves.
What's wrong with buying them in cardboard?? That's what we do and they seem just fine.
