De Blasio seems to understand that the rich need to pay their share, but I'm amazed that a number of working class and middle class people are fearful of taxing the rich. Do they not understand that the wealthy have increased their incomes substantially during the "great recession," while the average middle class family has seen a reduction in overall net-worth.

Mayoral Candidate Bill De Blasio explains why he should be elected - YouTube

Why are working class and middle class NYC residents so fearful to hold the rich accountable?

Because when a politician talks about "taxing the rich", he means "taxing anyone who makes money other than through government benefits".

Because many of the the working and middle-classs stiffs are still under the erroneous assumption that one day they will be rich too.

I don't believe Albany will increase the tax rates on the rich. But the question is, why are common working class and middle class people so fearful of even broaching this topic?

As a New Yorker myself who expresses the same ideas as Bill de Blasio on this numerous times, now I have to make a a bit of a back track. How can the city reduce income ineqality which takes years for working class and middle class folks to grow their wealth. But also public schools need to improve along with job creation.

BINGO! For some reason most don't understand that 98% of the population will remain (throughout their life) in the same class that they are born into.

Taxing the very rich more might encourage some of the tax base to move, negating much of the extra revenue.
