No. There was nothing I could do! My landlord is a scumbag and threatened to evict me. I have no lease so he told me "if you don't like it, get out" and that was it. I have no family to help me, nobody at all that I can turn to. He even stopped taking my rent and then served me with eviction papers for non payment.

I have a child and pets and I was looking at being on the street because I had no where to go. In the end, I had to give the slimeball ALL his money PLUS buy the stove myself. Go figure.

In your situation, I'm not sure what can be done. If you have a lease, she is clearly in violation of the lease. I would write her a certified/return receipt letter as well as sending it via regular mail w/certificate of mailing. Outline the problem, tell her if it's not fixed by ____ you will hire a licensed whatever to fix it and you will take that out of the rent money.

Do I have to have her permission before I state I will take it out of the rent money? Do you know how long is required to wait? It's not a safety issue so I doubt she will spend much time on it if at all.

If you want to do-it-yourself, this isn't too hard. If my co-op won't do mine when it eventually goes, here's a step-by-step video.

It's very easy to do and the ignitors are cheap on Amazon. Don't even bother with Home Depot, they want nearly $100 for a $14 ignitor.

find out if you have a governing board and if you do, inquire with them to see if it is legal to have her deduct the cost off the rent. since it is the governing board that has the final say as to what is legal, listening to her could be futile as she will say whatever she wants. i don't know where you are and who governs your lease but im in the Bronx NY so it's DHCR that governs my lease and i just call my local rent office with questions. you should find out who governs your lease so you can call them to inquire. having a complaint filed will protect your rights.

Look in lease, there should be something saying Landlord is supposed to provide a working fridge and stove. I would kindly remind your landlord of said clause in a letter. The funny thing with stoves 9 times out of 10 it's something very easy to fix, maybe a piece needs to get replaced or it needs to be cleaned. Your landlord is being a cheap idiot. I would also be careful that your stove isn't causing a Carbon Monoxide issue. May want to monitor the level of Carbon Monoxide in the air.
