I grew up during that time on Staten Island and am here to tell you there were plenty of lower, working and even middle class white men and women who held views similar to Archie Bunker's. Also and yes this included White Protestants and well as Catholics.

Some of the racism was more in your face and blatant sort of that that you often associate with some Italians and Irish. The Protestants were all over the map. Some ranted and said things just like AB, others were more subtle about it. Things like inviting their son or daughter entire elementary school class to a birthday party *except* any black kid or kids. Oh they would say "hello" and speak to the few black residents on the street but they didn't invite them over for cake and coffee, BBQ's or such. That or they only would when the family was alone.

We kids were playing at a (white) neighbor's house one day and her mother pulled her kid aside and asked about an upcoming party. "you didn't invite "X" ( a black kid on our street) to the party did you? It is going to be mostly family...." And so it went.

On Staten Island, in parts of Brooklyn and Queens there were places blacks just didn't go if they knew what was good for them. In the end you got the white flight out of areas in the City such as the North Shore that allowed blacks and other minorities (mostly Hispanic/Latino) to take over.

Many areas of the NS of Staten Island didn't just empty out of whites over the past two to three decades because the old timers died off; no whites high tailed it off the Rock and or to the South Shore soon as it became clear their street or area had "tipped".
I was referring to the fact that Archie being a white protestant was a minority back then, not that his views were uncommon.

You do realize "Protestant" covers a wide and vast array of faiths. Everything from High Episcopalian through Lutheran onto Methodist and right down to Evangelical including all that is between.

You really ought to come to Earth and visit New York City sometime....

Where in NYC one lives heavily influences what the religion "white people you grew up with" practice.

A Religious City

Staten Island and Brooklyn (surprise, surprise) are heavily Catholic. Manhattan not so much.
