I remember riding the NYC trains in the 70s, they were so noisy that you couldn't hear each other talk. also being very filthy and covered in graffiti.I must say the subway cars today are much better,except for the overcrowding.
I remember seeing the Guardian Angels walk thru the cars on the 5 train in early 1980. This was only a few months after they set up shop in Times Square.
The 42nd street and 8th Avenue station was a frightening place
42nd street and 6th Ave station, which was somewhat safer than Times Square stations and was my preferred station to go from and to the Port Authority, had nicer surroundings even back then and was pretty much like it is today
the F train in the late 70's was like the F train is today with the wider body, more seats facing different ways, quieter ride, fake woodgrain trim...but I think the F train was re routed at some point...

F trains are wider than the Lexington lines trains always as their tracks were built by different companies that used different systems.
