You would probably have better luck finding a small studio a few blocks north in the Village. When I lived on Bleecker Street, I used to walk to Soho all the time. Just a few blocks away.
I live on the border of Soho and Greenwich Village now. You won't be getting a 2-bedroom for $3,000. Studios trade for more than $2,000 and usually closer to $2,500, one bedrooms at least $3,000. Frankly, there's not a ton of going out in Soho--it's now a shopping neighborhood. In fact, the streets are pretty dead most nights. On weekends, it's overrun with tourists to the point that it can be hard to get around. I'm all for living close to work, but this doesn't sound workable/desirable for you.
I used to see UES studios for $1500, not that long ago. Still a lot of money to say you live somewhere, but not a total fleecing IMO. (If you want to and you can...)
