Yes,it's "safe" but I have heard that parking can be a real problem around there.The area West of Broadway and just South of the Columbia athletic fields,around Park Terrace,Seaman Ave,Indian Road,215th St is especially nice.
Almost bought an apartment there but decided it really wasn't any better than some parts of The Bronx but much more expensive,presumably because it is Manhattan.

Parking is terrible! I lived on the border of Inwood and the Heights, and parking was nearly impossible to find!

Safety is dependent on the street. West of Broadway is great, Vermilyea is okay, Sherman is mehh, Post and Nagle are sh*t. I'd stay west of Sherman

i always managed to find a spot on 212th street just E of Broadway when i had appts in that big bldg on 5030 B'way. otherwise i would park in the lot at 212th-213th and B'way. there is also a very small lot at B'way around 216th street with reasonable prices. parking is safe but tough

You can definitely get accosted up there, important to constantly be aware of your surroundings
