Headin up to Astoria this weekend.

Our plan is to:

Take 78 to the Holland Tunnel
Pop out and get on Canal Street
Down a few blocks to left on Centre
Up to Kenmare
And across the Williamsburg Bridge
Then merge into 278

There may be better routes, but we have rehearsed this over and over on google maps. We got it.

Now for the question: Is there anything weird or screwy with going this way? It looks good on Google Maps and our "guru" has divined it, but I will change in a minute if there is a reason to.

Want to thank youse guys in advance! Isn't that how you say it?

lln

Well it certainly is the cheapest method as you are avoiding tolls on the Triborough Bridge and keeping your use of NJ toll roads (Turnpike and or Garden State) low. But be prepared you may face some traffic in Manhattan as you aren't the first person with such an idea/route.

thank you very much. I was checking for like a huge sinkhole this morning, or something of that magnitude

No sinkholes that one knows of or such things. However there are plenty of NYC websites that give real time/up to the minute traffic reports. You can check one of them before you hit the road.

No sinkhole but lots of construction and traffic on that route.. I would not take it. Canal street can be a nightmare and
very confusing on sinage.

I would go across the Outerbridge Crossing onto Staten Island and follow the signs for the Verazano Bridge and 278 (thereby avoiding Manhattan... follow 278 all the way to Astoria.

This assumes that you are coming from the south

Driver would then have to deal with the construction and traffic on SI Expressway with equally confusing signs in some places. We even didn't bother coming home from Christmas and took the Goethals bridge-NJT to Lincoln Tunnel.

On a week day, I'd agree with you. The Holland Tunnel might as well be a sinkhole at morning/evening rush hour. However, on the weekend it's definitely the right route unless you're coming from Perth Amboy or points south.
