There were hoes working strolls all over NYC well into the 1980's.

When looking for first apartment in Manhattan checked out the Murray Hill area not far from GCT, and was quickly advised there were street walkers.

Ditto on the UES in the high 80's between Second and Third Avenue (near where the once firehouse now USPS office is located).

There were young (and not so much) gay boys and men working the area around 53rd and Third Avenue well into the 1990's....

In short nearly every area of Manhattan at one time or another had some sort of street action. You just had to know what to look for and where.

Yes. My sister had an apartment on Lex in the '20's. Hookers were all over the area, on both Lex and Park. There was also a stroll on Lex centering on the back of the Waldorf in midtown.

I have a few sisters and a niece. All lived in NYC at some points from the 70's to the 00's. All had been mugged and/or burglarized, and a lot of this was in better parts of Manhattan. Even good areas had significant crime. One sister used to live in Forrest Hills. She had three cars stolen. It became a joke. Open street prostitution and drug dealing was a fact of life, again, even in better parts of Manhattan as late as the late '80's, when I moved in. Of course, everything was worse in the areas you mention. But that doesn't mean it wasn't in issues everywhere.
I think Forest Hills had the highest car theft in the nation back then thanks to the Kew Gardens interchange. You could hotwire a car, jump on the Jackie, and be in a chopshop in Bushwick in no time.
