I am currently subletting an apartment from a girls who rents directly from the owner but apartment is obviously managed by a management company.
My lease expires at the end of the month so I am asking her when I am going to get my security deposit, she says that since she is not going to be in NYC she will send a friend to collect the keys the last day of April but she will send me the check the first week of May (After I leave the apartment).
I am used to getting my security deposit the same day I give the keys back.
In my experience it can take up to a month to get my security deposit back. The landlord needs to make sure there is no damage to the apartment. It is usually written in the lease when to expect the security deposit back.

Is this a regular procedure in NYC?
It's normal, but there's always the chance you won't get your money and will have to sue for it. Make sure you take photos of the way you left anything, in case there is any question later after you've left.
Same here, In 3 apartments in NYC, three landlords and only one gave me my deposit back the same day. He was a private landlord that lived next door (same building - 4 unit building) and was probably the best landlord I ever had.
The second was a management company, and they mailed me a check within 2 weeks.
The third tried to weasel his way out, but I had pictures and threatened legal action.
You mean take pictures of the whole apartment to proof everything is in good condition?
Is there anything else I should do besides taking pictures?
You should thoroughly clean, I mean thoroughly. That includes all blinds and fixtures, etc. Be sure to clean/dust/wash windows and sills, clear corners of dust and cobwebs, etc.

It's good and decent to thoroughly clean everything, however, the apartment merely has to be "broom clean" when you leave, not spotless and sparkling.
