I found it insane that for families making 80k~100k to struggle with market rate rent whereas families of 40k or less could have the choice of living in these new lux buildings.

why there is no middle class rebel against such radical housing discrimination in nyc?

You have to live within those boundaries to qualify?

For some of the 80/20 or whatever affordable housing lotteries, yes you must live within the CB area. It does vary as some developments offer *affordable* or *low income* units exclusively for local residents, others merely a portion and some have no restrictions at all. Obviously the large the pool of applicants for the limited amount of units the more odds grow against winning, just as with any lottery. Case in point: http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/2014...lem-apartments

There is a rather long list of preferences including municipal workers, disabled (mentally and physically), and so forth. Given the new found *progressive* groove NYC government seems to be taking that list could be expanded to cover any social demographic the de Blasio administration and or City Council deems in need such as LGBT, domestic abuse victims, veterans, etc..., etc..., etc...

The middle class doesn't really have strong representation in NYC outside of maybe unions but they are mostly concerned with members contracts.

I make around 48k a year and I don't qualify for most market rate apartments and I make too much for "affordable housing". lol Just the way it goes I guess. I'm happy where I am now in the Bronx (Bedford Park section). I wish I had a chance to live at a newly built luxury building but I never qualify on both ends of the spectrum.

There is a black hole for many of these affordable housing programs when it comes to moderate income households (those making around 80-120% of AMI - for a single person that is around 50-70K) where they fall through the cracks - make too much for the low-income allotments and too little for the middle income allotments. If you fall into that category, it's pretty frustrating, especially with market rate apartments so expensive.

is it time to form a middle class union then?

model citizens who work hard and contribute are not treated fair here. How do you all put up with it?

Because we are expected to take care of ourselves. It is starting to become enticing to give up the middle class job for something with a lower salary just to benefit from the actions of the rule-makers.

After paying for a market rate rent, your disposable income is probably less than those low income families. that is how the city regulates affordable housing...:
