Re: Fraunces - it was my neighborhood go-to for the past few years, until ~June or so - the have had a "C" rating for the past few months. I know that it's relatively easy to get a "C" but the fact that they haven't gone the route of "grade pending" while trying to fix it is odd. They are doing kitchen renovations, but still - until they are upgraded, stick to drinks only (and definitely sit by the fireplace at the Dingle Whiskey Bar!!).
BUT - the Growler is just around the corner on Stone Street and have a HUGE offering of brews (don't miss out on the hidden "Underdog" bar downstairs!)! Welcome to The Growler
And Dead Rabbit (2 doors down from Fraunces) is awesome as well - put your name in for a table on the 2nd level Parlor room and enjoy the piano player! Thanks, never been. They've been doing this stuff in Belgium for centuries. I'll take them over our IPAs or wheats any day of the week. I like to be patriotic, but some things are just done better elsewhere. As for the US, Ommegang's got a pretty good niche going on off the Belgium recipe.

Beer fanatics the world over actually disagree with you. The best beer in the world is currently being made here. Nearly every "traditional" style is being replicated somewhere in this country, with many being rated higher than the originals.
The US has far surpassed Belgium within the past two to three years in terms of quality and refinement.
I do enjoy the occasional De Ranke Saison and St. Bernadus Quad, but these have nothing on a Goose Island Bourbon County, Heady Topper, Southern Tier Pumking, Spring House Big Greusome...
Never been a fan of Hennepin or Dogfish Head. Something about their yeast that doesn't sit right with me.
Stone on the other hand is building a 50 million brewing facility in Richmond Virgina next year, so the east coast distribution won't be left out on many of their Stochasticity project releases.
