I don't agree with that. I would give that title to South Florida.

They have the gun permits to prove it.

I love loaded questions. OP, have you stopped beating your wife?

I live in NYC and can say that since everyone seems to be hustling for something in NYC, your immediate inclination is to think everyone you meet has an alternative motive and wants something from you. I think there are people like this everywhere but NYC seems to have more of them. You need to be always hustling else you will get run over. Sad, really.

I find living here much healthier for me, mentally and physically, than I found living in the South or Midwest. I meet people every day who have a high amount of ambition and creative energy, and I appreciate them. In the past, living in those other cities, I would try to get projects or bands going, and people would rapidly lose interest and drop out. They just didn't seem serious about their craft the way people are here. It's one reason I was interested in moving here.

I also find that walking everywhere is physically healthier for me and far less stressful than commuting by car. The weather is the best of anywhere I've lived: milder winters than some places, and milder summers than others. The fall is amazing here. I find the city far safer too, and as my wife and I have both previously encountered and been victims of violent crimes in other cities, I value that. Finally, there are more jobs here than in other places I've lived, and they pay better, so I feel more comfortable about the income to COL ratio, especially with rent stabilization, utilities included with rent, not needing to own a car, etc.

YMMV of course.
