Report says best place is Wyoming? Where in Wyoming can senior citizens get reliable chronic and geriatric care, with reliable transportation to-from the clinic?

These rankings are for idiots.

Anyone who moves to Wyoming to retire, to a place where they don't know anyone, with no real public transportation and most likely poor services is an IDIOT!

Wyoming is the best state to retire to? Really?

Wyoming has fewer than 600,000 people. Its largest cities, Cheyenne and Casper, have less than 60k population each. Its next biggest city, Laramie, has 30k. It only has 9 cities that have populations over 10k. I'm sure those 9 cities can provide all the necessities and amenities any retiree would ever need or want.

The article is a feed from bankrate.com, which tells you everything you need to know about the likely methodology of the "survey". Tax rates was the prime determinant of ranking, and you can bet that the taxes included in the tax rate were many taxes that don't apply to most retirees. It doesn't matter if another state doesn't have a state income tax and NYS does, if you have a private pension < $20k if your retirement income is just your SS + $20k pension + $3600 in IRA/401K funds. How much income tax are you going to pay on $3600 in income? It doesn't matter to most retirees that retirees with incomes of $100k annually get a a better deal in State X than they do in NY.

the best state to retire to is the one that meets your goals and expectations.

for us , right here in queens meets everything we want or need . pricey ? sure but this is where our family is. kids , grandkids are all right here .

there are things that money can't price in to the equation.

we found that out when we thought of retiring to PIKE COUNTY in PA where we had bought a 2nd home.

as we got closer to retiring and priority's changed we realized everything we would want in retirement it lacked

no public transportation if we couldn't drive

limited medical facility's and specialists

nothing to do all winter

limited things to do daily as you age . that walk around the lake was ho hum after the 2nd part time year there

no where to work if you wanted to or needed to except local mom and pop stores at minimum wage.

the list went on and end and we realized right here in ny had it all.

sold the house almost 3 years ago.

What's happening to many retirees is that the cost of property taxes make it too prohibitive to retire here. This is mostly true for Nassau and Suffolk counties however, not NYC. Go take a look over in the Long Island forum and see what most of their posts are about...It's not uncommon to be retired and have a paid off house, but 13K property tax for the year in Nassau County. Some of them are relocating to North Carolina, Kentucky, etc.

think about the fact that when i was younger we all got houses out in suffulk county for 30-35k. (mid 1970's)

you got 30 years to pay off a mortgage that was under 250 bucks a month . i remember my rent was 209 back then..

if you were retiring today does the fact you paid off a mortgage really matter ?

not at all , when it represents 1/2 a utility bill for a month.

taxes and expenses have so over taken the cost of that mortgage that the fact you have a payed off home does not make it any easier to retire here.

people forget the fact that by the time a mortgage is paid that mortgage you no longer have does not make affordability of retiring here any better.

while it may be cheaper than renting in some parts it still does not add much to the afforability factor of staying here..

^This

About every three weeks Yahoo will have an article "Best States to Retire to" or "Best Foreign Country to Retire to", and if you read the comments, these lists are almost universally ridiculed.
