I personally wouldn't live past DeKalb. I actually think the area around the Jefferson stop is kinda cute, lots of restaurants and a nice grocery store. I live off the L train so I can attest that its pretty busy at all hours.

Have you looked off the J train? It tends to be cheaper. I have a friend paying $1500 for a studio off of Kosciuszko. Not the cutest area but I never felt unsafe coming and going from her palce.

that's a fluke incident, especially considering what time of day it happened at. I've been out and about at all hours of the day around here and haven't ever felt unsafe,so spare me the "gunshots are loud" idiot savant routine por favor

I live off the Wilson stop and I nor my wife, thank God, have ever felt unsafe. We don't come home very late but I don't think that makes much of a difference as there is plenty of foot traffic in the area, as long as you mind your business and are aware of your surroundings you should be fine.
As for all the doom-and-gloom individuals on this forum I believe most of them do not even reside in Brooklyn, let alone NYC, however I would suggest you do some recon work on weekends / evenings / nights either by driving around or even better biking around and see how the area feels to you.

Best of luck.
