Is this post from 1990 or something? I don't get it. There are probably a dozen current water taxi/ferry locations on the Brooklyn waterfront.
No there isn't. There's one from sunset park that I think was meant to help commuters when the R train construction started, maybe thats what you're thinking of.

Ferries cannot be made to operate of fares unless the fares are outlandish.

Governmental subsides have been tried for startups, but when the subsidy stops, so does the service.

Trans borough water taxies/ferries cannot compete with subways any better than trans-Hudson ferries could compete with PATH.

Yep. They even have a little boat docking station now---spent plenty of money on it and I don't recall it being used ONCE this past summer because this "brand new" thing needed repairs already. (It was used the first year it opened, which was the summer before.)

I doubt it. I don't think people feel like taking the bus/train to get to the pier, which MOST people would have to do. There are only two buses right now that go nearby there and they only come down Bay Ridge Avenue until Narrows and then turn left, ending up in front of the HS two blocks away. Why do that when you can walk right out of your place and onto an express bus or take the train, which is much closer to you if you live between 3rd through 6th avenues.

And funcrusher is correct---they had a ferry from Sunset Park that they revived and subsequently stopped due to lack of ridership.

Downtown Brooklyn does not resemble Midtown Manhattan the slightest bit. Maybe Jersey City, or some crappy middle American city like Kansas City or Oklahoma City, but Midtown Manhattan is a stretch.
